DIY Egg Carton for Play Shop

Every year around Easter we eat a lot of these “Löffeleier” (chocolate eggs to spoon) from a German chocolate company that colours all of their products in purple. I always liked their cute little egg cartons and felt uncomfortable to just throw them away. However, this year my son’s egg carton for his play shop departed this life. Can you put one and one together? Of course, this was the perfect opportunity to make a new egg carton for the play shop AND throw away less “Löffeleier” cartons. 🙂 Here is what I did:

List of materials:

1. Fabric (I used linen) in a natural/light colour
2. Pinking scissors
3. Magic marker
4. Scraps of fabric in matching or contrasting colours (I chose pink, purple, and yellow)
5. Sewing machine with black thread
6. Standard needle
7. One purple egg carton
8. Fabric glue
9. A pattern: I draw a hen that just laid an (easter)egg…. 🙂 If you want to use my pattern, you can download it here.

STEP 1: Draw a pattern or download mine (see above). Cut a piece of fabric into a square with a width of 2.2 inches (i.e., 5.5 cm). Transfer the pattern onto your piece of fabric using a magic marker.

STEP 2: From your scraps of fabric cut pieces for the egg, the tail, the comb, and the wattles of the hen. There is no need for highest precision; I did it free hand.

STEP 3: Originally, I intended to do free-motion sewing, but I could not find my free-motion food (found it in the meantime, though…). Thus, I just sewed around the shapes (with the standard settings of my sewing machine and) by sewing slowly and moving my fabric a lot under the pressure foot. Do not cut the threads yet.

STEP 4: Finish machine sewing. Take a standard needle and guide all the threads from the front towards the back. Secure them with knots. Do the same with those threads that have been at the back right from the beginning.

STEP 5: Carefully wet the fabric in order to make the Magic marker disappear… 🙂 If you are not sure whether your fabric scraps will bleed, better wait a day (because Magic markers disappears also over time).

STEP 6: Grab the purple egg carton (the one you saved from the waste) and some fabric glue. Iron the finished piece of fabric…

…and glue it onto the egg carton (center it).
