About Me & My Veritas

Welcome to my blog! My name is Jana and, as you might have guessed already, I love to sew on my old ardently loved Veritas sewing machine (see below). If necessary, I can browse through my fabric piles and roles for hours. 😉 In real live, I am a scientist, spouse of a wonderful man, and mom of the most adorable four-year-old. I did not learn to sew before my baby boy turned one; so you can still call me a Sewbie. Due to the very intense work load in my job, spare time is rare. Therefore, I usually sew late at night and pay heed to the following motto: Rome was not stitched in a day (or something like that). This is why you will find here plenty of small projects that can be easily done by spending no more than 15 minutes a day.

7 fun facts about me:

1. I moved to Toronto from Germany in fall 2013. At that time I could not hear a difference between: hat and head, chair and share, Maple Leafs and Maple Leaves, sew and saw.

2. I have a twin brother. When we were kids, we used to talk to each other even while sleeping.

3. I am twice as old as I look like….

4. When walking around in my apartment, I regularly bump into a wall, corner, door, my better half’s foot, or anything else that is lying or standing around. Fortunately, I have not run over my son so far.

5. I eat dough ice cream just for the sake of the dough pieces.

6. I am really bad when it comes to fashion, which is why I usually buy the complete outfit a mannequin is wearing.

7. I am unable to get any proverb right. I mix them up or unintentionally invent new ones. A while ago, a friend of mine and my better half had started collecting MY versions of proverbs in a list… I am pretty sure they are feeding the Sprichwortgenerator with my creations… It is unfortunately only in German but so funny.

11 answers to 11 questions (from Lore):

1. Why did you start blogging?

Like most bloggers out there, blogging primarily allows me to share my passion and meet like-minded people from all over the world. I still can not believe that readers from 79 countries (as of May 16th 2015) have been visiting this site, so far!!! In addition to this, I also want to make a difference in my own way by inspiring people to sew and craft with or for kids.

2. What are you most proud of?

That’s simple: My son. I love him more than anything in this world! As a scientist I need to add that he is the best experiment I have ever started! 😉

3. What’s your favourite animal?

Polar bears or E. coli 😉

4. What’s your favourite book?

Water Music by T.C. Boyle.

5. What three things could you not live without?

Again, the tiny scientist sitting on my shoulder whispers: air, food, and water. 😉 But I guess this is not what you meant. Therefore, my second answer is: my son, my better half, and my crafting shelf.

6. What food do you dislike the most?

Licorice.

7. What was the first record/cd you bought?

I really do not remember.

8. What is your favourite time of the year and why?

Now that I am here in Canada it is Summer, simply because I love to go camping and canoeing. There is nothing better in this world than canoeing all day and resting over night in a tent on a lonely island with wolfs howling in the distance. Such days ground me.

9. If you could go back to anytime in history which time period would you choose?

That’s a good question. I am tempted to go back to a time when the dinosaurs still lived. Wouldn’t that be fantastic? I would also like to go AHEAD in time to see the future, though….

10. What is your favourite film genre?

I like any kind of science-fiction movies (whether real or animated)—complete with heroes, fantastic places, supernatural powers, and impossible quests.

11. What do you consider to be the greatest beauty product of all time?

Soap! 😉

  1. I knew I forgot to say something important. Thank you for the follow. I’ve never heard of a Veritas machine. I’d be interested to know where it comes from. I was born in Germany way too many years ago but now live in Oregon. The fact that you work an outside job, have a child, husband (inside job) and still manage to create is a lot. I too learned to sew but not till after my daughter was born. Then I sewed for my older son too. I loved learning all these things about you. Happy sewing.

  2. Thank you so much for your kind comment and your interest in the sewing machine. Veritas sewing machines have been produced in Wittenberge in the eastern part of Germany. The factory had been founded in 1904 as a branch of the famous Singer machines. My machine is probably from 1980. The factory then was forced to close in 1992 as a result of the reunification of Germany. Until then more than 7 Mio. sewing machines have been produced. Thank you also for sharing some of your personal details with me! 🙂 Hope your son and daughter are fine. Do they still like when you make them something? Have a lovely day, Jana

  3. They would like it if I still made them things. My daughter sews her own now when she can find the time. She can never find what she wants at the stores. My son has plenty but I should make him a quilt soon. I’m working on several but none for him. 😦 Need to remedy that soon. It was a sad day when Viking bought out Pfaff and they are neither made in Europe anymore. I have both a basic Pfaff and a Viking. You’ve given me quite an education today. Thank you. I’ll be seeing you. 🙂

  4. Speaking of Pfaff… I lived in Kaiserslautern before I moved to Toronto. That’s exactly where the Pfaff sewing machines used to be produced. I passed the old factory area (it’s in town) so often, I can barely count it. Regarding the quilt. Do you know the origin of this? Why, for instance, is it so common in North America but not in Europe?

  5. I have my mother’s old Pfaff from 1962. I was born in Cologne area and moved and moved and moved. The quilting bug is picking up momentum in Europe as well now. It has been around since the middle ages with even crusaders wearing quilted garments under their armor. Quilting became even more popular here during the civil war as a way to communicate to runaway slaves whether they were at a safe location or they should keep moving to somewhere else. I’ve only been quilting a very short time and still learning.

  6. Oh my, thank you so much for educating me this time. This sounds so interesting. Will read into this! 🙂 I haven’t done a quilt yet. However, I have been collecting special shirts from me and my better half for 9 years now. One day I will make a quilt from this and it will hopefully mean that our place is a safe one. 🙂 Have a very good night.

  7. Thanks for the like on my post, and I hope you don’t mind that I’ve started following you. (not just for the tutorials too hehe) My daughter is 19 months (almost 20 months at the end of this month) and was born in Trier, Germany. Now we live in Luxembourg because my husband works there, but I am from Canada (he is British tho). Funny how that works both ways, huh? 😀

  8. Hahaha. That’s really funny. All these parallels. I used to live in Kaiserslautern during the last two years in Germany. That’s quite close to Trier. Have been IN Trier actually once during school. 🙂 How do you like Luxembourg? Have a lovely day and nice weekend 🙂

  9. I love it here. We used to live here about 15 years ago (maybe more now, how the time flies…), but things didn’t work out, so we ended up all over the place before coming back here. Hubby’s been working here for a while, but we’ve only now been able to find a place we can afford that is both convenient for the college our son is going to in the fall, and hubby’s work.

My son is a fan of the Kaiserslautern football team. *grins* He’ll think this is hysterical, I’m sure. 😀 (and we’re actually going to Trier tomorrow hehehe)

Thanks and have a great weekend too. I hope things aren’t too cold there anymore? Not entirely sure how the weather is in Canada anymore, cuz it seems to be so changing that I can’t keep track, and my parents don’t tell me anything. *pouts*

  10. What a story! 🙂 Has been still very cold here until a few weeks ago, and now it’s almost Summer. In Toronto, the seasons basically jump from Winter to Summer within 2-3 weeks. That still feel weird. 😉

  11. LOL Yeah, that’s about par for the course where I’m from too (Alberta). They used to joke that there were 2 seasons: cold and not-so-cold. 😀 I do hope the summer sticks around for you, since Canadian winters are brutal. 😦 I don’t miss that (anymore).

  12. Hahaha! So true. All of it! 🙂 5 months of Winter is just super crazy! 😉 But at least chances of snow on Christmas Eve are quite high. There is always something positive. 😉 Cheers, Jana

  13. Thank you very much for asking! I highly appreciate this and just updated my post to be more clear about it. You do not need a sewing machine to make the saw. The only step I used it was step 8. Here, you can alternatively use a hand needle. Taken together, instead of using fabric glue I would highly recommend to also sew step 8 by hand. Hope this helps. Have a lovely evening, Jana

  19. Hi Jana – thanks for stopping by my blog. Yours is great! You have a lots of nice and quick little ideas. Your bio is great too. Coincidentally enough, I just moved to Seattle from Germany as well! (Seems there’s a few of us around). I was in Frankfurt for 6 years, but my now-husband was in Mannheim and visited Kaiserslautern fairly regularly. He is American, I am Scottish. Our little boy was born in Frankfurt and is apparently a Frankfurt Würstchen according to the nurses 😉
